At about six o’clock in the morning on June 20, 2000, about a dozen cops and FBI agents armed with loaded machine guns and decked out in full riot gear burst into my apartment building with the intention of indicting me on federal charges of securities fraud and money laundering. They pounded on the door to my apartment on Mercer Street until someone answered. But that someone wasn’t me. I was asleep upstairs the whole time.

About three years earlier, I had rented a second apartment in the same building I’d been living in since the 1980s. The first apartment was on the twenty-first floor, and I moved up to the twenty-sixth floor. John’s oldest son, Shawn, had recently moved to New York, and I let him stay in the other apartment while he worked for the company setting up our early web presence.

I wish I could have seen Shawn’s face when he opened the door that morning. To his credit, he simply told the officers, “He doesn’t live here anymore.” They had no clue that he was my nephew or that I was still in the same building. They left, and I slept right through Shawn’s frantic phone call and the dozens of other calls that followed as Shawn tried to reach someone who could get in touch with me to tell me what was going on. It was probably the best night’s sleep I would get for several more years. I woke up maybe an hour later to roughly forty texts all telling me to get the hell out of the building, because I was about to be indicted.

I jumped out of bed, threw on a pair of jeans and an old, ratty T-shirt, and snuck out the back of the building through the freight elevator. On the way, I called Peter and told him what had happened. “Meet me at Ronny’s place, and I’ll get Joel,” he told me calmly. Ronny was a friend of Peter’s, and Joel was my lawyer. I raced to Ronny’s office, and within an hour, Peter and Joel came to get me and take me to federal court to surrender.

It was a grueling, painful day, but for months I had known it was coming. When the government went public in the fall of 1999 with the fact that the principals from both Stratton Oakmont (Danny and Jordan) and Monroe Parker (Bryan Herman) were cooperating as witnesses for the government against dozens of people who had committed illegal acts, Peter had helped me find a lawyer, Joel Winograd, in case one of those people was me.

Things were looking bad for the Strattonites, and not just Danny and Jordan. At around the same time, my old friend Dean was arrested for stock fraud along with three other former Stratton brokers.
